I am Samita, a fashion designer and an academic. I work closely with eco textiles and artisan crafts.

I am an alumnus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, India. I have a Master's degree in Fashion Design with honors from the Auckland University of Technology.

For my Master's research project, I worked closely with Tongan Tapa cloth painters. I have worked with buying and fashion houses in the United States of America, Europe, Australasia, and the Middle East. I have dressed models, beauty queens, and film stars. I have been covered widely by print and visual media in Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, and India. I lecture at international conferences and write articles on fashion and textiles in Australia, New Zealand, and India. I was a finalist at the Style Pasifika Fashion Awards in Auckland for two successive years. For a decade, I was the Coordinator of Major Studies (Fashion and Costume Design) at the Academy of Design Australia (AoDA), Port Melbourne.

I felt there was a need for fashion to reinvent itself. Fast fashion, a polluting, wasteful, and unethical industry needed to be replaced with a process that addressed sustainability, ethics, and handmade. I started Deidaaecogifts online. As the name suggests, Deidaaecogiftsonline sells unique gifts that are eco, ethically made, and handcrafted. My label Deidaa was one of the four Australian fashion businesses selected to showcase at World Boutique, Hong Kong.

I was a finalist in the Sustainability Champion of the Year category at the National Retail Awards, Australia and in the Sustainability category at the Ausmumpreneur Awards in 2021. I was a finalist in three categories of the Ausmumpreneuer Awards - Fashion, Sustainability, and Multicultural Business Excellence. I won the silver trophy in the sustainability category.

At the height of the "plume boom" in the late 19th century, feathers, wings, and even entire stuffed birds were used to trim women’s hats. This mass slaughter brought many birds to the brink of extinction and sparked conservation efforts, including the creation of the Audubon Society. Associate Curator of Decorative Arts Dawn R. Brean and Rebecca Kelly, textile conservator at the University of Rhode Island and visiting curator at Newport Historical Society, held a lively discussion on this deadly topic on March 16, 2021.

- Markers (for colour coding wires)
- Wire (I’m using 1.6mm galvanised and 1mm millinery)
- Wire cutters/ pliers
- Thread
- Needle
- Duct tape

- Vaseline & rag (or any other release agent)
- Weighing scales (covered in clingfilm for protections)
- Gloves, face mask & apron
- Plastic tubs (these will no longer be food safe once you’ve used them)
- Plaster (AKA plaster of paris of gypsum – at least 1.5kg)
- Room temperature water
- Mixing tools (I used a plastic spoon)
- Isopropyl Alcohol spray (optional)
- Fine sandpaper (120 grit & a sanding block)
- Paint (water based acrylic, emulsion or spray)
- Paintbrush
- Gloss varnish (spray or paint on)
- Rubber door seal (or electrical wire or thick rope & silicone bathroom sealer)

Millinery Tutorial on How to make a pillbox disc with sinamay fan detail fascinator headpiece.

This fantastic hat is made from left over cuts of Ivory and Navy Sinamay pieces, folded for that fan effect and sewn onto a stiffened felt pillbox base.

Making a handmade silk and cotton rose in real time using flower iron tools. I'll start by demoing making your own stamens, then talk about suitable fabrics. I'll then use ball tools to shape the rose petals, make the centre of the rose, a few velvet leaves and a rosebud. All of these components can then be grouped together on a single stem into a beautiful flower spray.

Milliner (hat maker) makes Beauxbatons Harry Potter Goblet of Fire hat (designed and made for the film by Philip Treacy). In this video I will be modifying a plain crown block or poupee head using rope to create a pointy tip witch’s hat. I’ll also modify a mushroom brim block using hair rats. Then I’ll block and put together the whole hat using wool felt. I also made myself an authentic witch’s broomstick to complete the look.

I am Samita, a fashion designer and an academic. I work closely with eco textiles and artisan crafts.

I am an alumnus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, India. I have a Master's degree in Fashion Design with honors from the Auckland University of Technology.

For my Master's research project, I worked closely with Tongan Tapa cloth painters. I have worked with buying and fashion houses in the United States of America, Europe, Australasia, and the Middle East. I have dressed models, beauty queens, and film stars. I have been covered widely by print and visual media in Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, and India. I lecture at international conferences and write articles on fashion and textiles in Australia, New Zealand, and India. I was a finalist at the Style Pasifika Fashion Awards in Auckland for two successive years. For a decade, I was the Coordinator of Major Studies (Fashion and Costume Design) at the Academy of Design Australia (AoDA), Port Melbourne.

I felt there was a need for fashion to reinvent itself. Fast fashion, a polluting, wasteful, and unethical industry needed to be replaced with a process that addressed sustainability, ethics, and handmade. I started Deidaaecogifts online. As the name suggests, Deidaaecogiftsonline sells unique gifts that are eco, ethically made, and handcrafted. My label Deidaa was one of the four Australian fashion businesses selected to showcase at World Boutique, Hong Kong.

I was a finalist in the Sustainability Champion of the Year category at the National Retail Awards, Australia, and in the Sustainability category at the Ausmumpreneur Awards in 2021. I was a finalist in three categories of the Ausmumpreneuer Awards - Fashion, Sustainability, and Multicultural Business Excellence. I won the silver trophy in the sustainability category.

Making of a Trilby Hat

This is my version of how to make Mrs Maisel's pleated ribbon cocktail hat from her holiday in the Catskills. I will go over a vintage millinery technique of making wire frame base hats, types of wire coverings, and of course how to pleat petersham ribbon. As usual I'll give you some variations to try. Just remember, this is my preferred method, there is no right or wrong way, just whatever works for you 😊
